The Philadelphia Daily News reports that the Eagles will try to sign tight end L.J. Smith to a new contract between now and next February. If a deal can't be reached, the team could use the franchise tag on Smith. The '07 franchise number for a tight end is just $4.371 million.
L.J. has really been a big key to the offense. He even blocked fairly well last year. Hopefully both sides will give in some, and come to an agreement. If not then it will come down to the franchise tag game. The last thing they need is a Lance Briggs situation.
